Adult Swim ID ‘Smiling Friends’
We created an ID for our favourite Adult Swim show ‘Smiling Friends’

The ID takes place in a back street parking lot where we find Glep doing burnouts in the famous Company Car. The style is based on a love of street racing and car culture.
We created the distinct style using a collaged, photocopied technique which we then elevated by taking into Blender to create a paper style scene with three dimensions. We animated Glep in 2D to keep the mixed media feel.
We used storyboards and black and white photography within Blender to get a sense of the lighting and the mood of the piece before landing on the final palette.
The color palette was always going to be super important as is such a big part of the night racing culture. We opted for the classic pink and blye but not before trying a couple of different options based on our research.
In early style explorations we had wanted the environment to feel a bit more collage and ‘stop motion'-y’ but as the project evolved we settled on a slightly more refined version. Below are some of our earlier concept art and exploration.
